Platte County Detention Facility Set for Upgrades

The Platte County Detention Facility is preparing for upgrades this year, as approved by the Platte County Board of Supervisors. B-D Construction secured a $1,642,685 bid for the plumbing work at the jail.

Mike Kennedy of RVW Inc. explained during a board meeting that the plumbing infrastructure would undergo improvements. He stated, "They're replacing the grease trap that's in the kitchen area within that infrastructure." Kennedy further emphasized the need to upgrade the non-functional grease trap and relocate it for better access and security.

Kennedy mentioned that two restrooms on the west side of the facility would be replaced. Platte County Sheriff Ed Wemhoff highlighted the significance of the project, emphasizing the necessity of replacing the problematic grease trap due to its impact on plumbing and drainage. He also pointed out space constraints as a major issue for the restrooms, stating, "They're going to need more room for the plumbing so they can actually get people in there to work on the plumbing."

Wemhoff acknowledged that the jail, built in June 2003, is exhibiting signs of wear and tear, but the upgrades will focus on essential areas. He stated, "We aren't going to replace everything but I think it's something we start budgeting every year and start replacing a few things." The project received $548,000 from the county's American Rescue Plan Act funding. After reviewing the matter, the building and grounds committee recommended keeping the bid as it is, and the board approved it.

Construction is scheduled to begin in September, with a one-year timeline for completion.
