Betty Thoms


Betty Thoms, 77, of Columbus, Nebraska, formerly of Omaha, Nebraska, passed away on April 5, 2023, at the Columbus Community Hospital.


A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 13, at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus with Rev. Cindi Stewart officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday, from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and will continue on Thursday, from 10:00 AM until service time at the church. Interment will be at a later date at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Omaha. Memorials may be directed to the family.


Betty Ann Thoms was born on August 14, 1945, in Omaha, to Ruby Miller (Shrader). She attended school in Omaha and graduated from Omaha South High School in 1963. After high school, Betty moved to California for a short time and worked for Intel before moving back to Nebraska, where she earned an electronics degree and went to work designing security and fire safety systems.


Betty was united in marriage to Charles Thoms in Papillion, Nebraska. She worked various secretarial jobs through the years, and she also worked part-time doing research and analysis for hospital systems prior to retirement. Betty also volunteered many hours at the Douglas County Health Center. In September of 2017, Betty moved to Columbus to be closer to her son. She enjoyed playing games including poker and Mexican dominoes and was also an avid reader. Betty was a very outgoing person, she never met a stranger and loved spending time with her friends and family, and especially her grandchildren.

Grandchildren: Ashton, Brylee, Camden, Deakin, & Wynstin

Sister: Linda (Wayne) Eliason

Nephew: Marty (Monica) Smith

Nieces: Susie Looney & Jeannie (Nate) Beier

Great Nieces & Nephews: Beau & Blake Smith; Mekenzie, Sydney, Avery, & Aiden Looney; Skyler & Shelbi Crees
